A lovely couple in the U.S. got in touch as they love shells, they asked me if I could create them an expression of a shell and gave me creative freedom which was such a lovely process.
We collaborated on the concept and style and came up with this Nautilus shell. It was an incredible challenge as the shell proportions are the ‘golden ratio’ - beautiful arcs reducing and ascending to the centre. I created the ‘skeleton’ of the shell entirely from card and by eye. No maths or computers were involved in construction!
I then wanted to create the crashing wave effect inspired by the ocean. Using 5 different coloured papers I created over 7,000 different sized paper tabs which were all hand stuck to the form to create the rolling waves.
The shell was packed up and sent to the U.S. where the clients got it beautifully framed by a specialist framer who fitted the frame with UV glass to ensure it will keep it’s colour forever.
Please see below for creative process, shipping information, production time, care instructions etc.
Creating a bespoke paper sculpture for someone is an exciting adventure, I find the collaborative process very rewarding and creative. Initially we discuss the subject that is close to your heart, this can be anything from a bird or a shell to a particular flower or animal, there’s a lot of beauty out there in the world!
The next step is to decide the approach, whether you’d like to reproduce the sculpture true to life or to use an expression approach, this can be an exploration in colour and paper style, pattern and texture.
Shipping within the UK
Shipping is not included. The price can vary greatly depending on the distance. Due to the fragility of the box frames, collection or a designated driver is preferred. Other courier options are available.
Shipping is not included. Special delivery of a box frame can be arranged subject to cost, various courier options are available.
As a rule the models take approximately 6-8 weeks to complete. There can sometimes be a waiting list, in this event I can produce a bespoke card which can be used as a gift.
It is very important to keep the artwork out of direct sunlight such as near a window, this will avoid colour fading.
Avoid moist environments, such as bathrooms damp conservatories etc.
If the work is put into storage I recommend putting silica sachets in the box to absorb any moisture.
